Project Description

The “Downs” Corpus is grouped within a single folder comprising transcriptions of Down Syndrome patients contributed to the PERLA general Corpus by Félix Díaz and Teresa Simón, lecturers at the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM, Spain). The recordings transcribed refer to two different persons with Downs Syndrome, TCM and FCG, and were taken at different moments in different organizations. In this file we provide details of the data collection and the individuals and organizations involved. For more information, you are welcome to get in touch with the PERLA Project participants based in Talavera (felix.diaz@uclm.es, teresa.simon@uclm.es).

The TCM recording was collected under the auspices of Gema de las Heras Mínguez and Lidia Rodríguez García, also lecturers at the UCLM, and with the collaboration of “ASPRONA-Adapei”, an Educational and Family Services organization managed by Juan Martínez Carrillo. The FCG recordings were collected under the auspices of Esther Moreno Cerrillo, at the time a final year Speech Therapy student at our University, and with the collaboration of ASDOWNTO, a Down Syndrome Association, whose speech therapist, Noelia Núñez Andrés, was our key contact and collaborator for this purpose.

Project history

The TCM data were collected in Spring 2002, within the research project “Compilation and analysis of a corpus of natural videos of speech therapy asessment and intervention”, funded by the UCLM, which aimed at collecting videos of speech therapy practice for their analysis, with the final aim of applying the analysis to student and professional training. The transcription was done between 2013 and 2015, within the subsequent research project “Linguistic analysis of child and clinical corpora in the frame of the international project childes/TALKBANK”, funded by the Spanish Department of Economy and Competitivity, one of whose main aims was to make clinical corpora available in chat transcription format in the CHILDES platform.

Gema de las Heras and Lidia Rodríguez contacted ASPRONA-Adapei and gained the collaboration of Juan Martínez Carrillo, Technical Director of the Service. The recordings were done at their premises in Albacete by Gloria Perales, the speech therapist who interacts with the child in the recordings. She simply turned on a tape recorder and a video recorder at the beginning of the sessions, and turned them off at the end, so the records strictly include her daily speech therapy work with the child. The transcript was produced by Félix Díaz.

The TCM recordings were collected at the ASPRONA-Adepei centre, where Gloria Perales does her common Speech Therapy work. The child and her sit face to face around a square table and perform their routine reading and conversational activities.

The FCG data were collected in Spring 2013, as part of the research work leading to the completion of Esther Moreno Cerrillo’s Final Year Speech Therapy Dissertation. The transcription was done between 2013 and 2015, within the research project “Linguistic analysis of child and clinical corpora in the frame of the international project childes/TALKBANK”, funded by the Spanish Department of Economy and Competitivity, one of whose main aims was to make clinical corpora available in chat transcription format in the CHILDES platform.

Esther Moreno contacted ASDOWNTO and gained the collaboration of Noelia Núñez, Speech Therapist at the Association. The recordings were done at the ASDOWNTO premises in Toledo by both of them. Esther Moreno devised a series of provoqued conversational situations for data collection, which included the following:

The FCG recordings were collected at the ASDOWNTO premises. Participants in the encounters sit face to face round a table and perform the above activities.

The transcripts included in the corpus were produced by Félix Díaz, and belong to the situations 1, 2, and 3.

Biographical data

TCM is a 10 year-old boy with Down Syndrome; at ASPRONA-Adapei he was diagnosed with a Learning Disability in Reading and Writing.

FCG is a 17-year old boy with Down Syndrome. At ASDOWNTO he is regarded as high pragmatic performance, able to participate in fluid conversation and with basic social skills. At the age of 2 he started receiving early intervention in Puertollano. At the age of 8 he became a user of ASDOWNTO. He was always schooled in ordinary schools in Toledo. He currently has curricular adaptation for most of his subjects at school.

Usage Restrictions

The seven recordings included where authorised by participants under the assurance that records and transcripts will only be used for research or teaching purposes, and always guaranteeing full anonymity. The contributors require to be sent a copy of any published report using the data, and would also be grateful to be sent copies of unpublished reports or samples used for teaching purposes.
