This corpus has been created for the purposes of a socio-linguistic study on the acquisition of Estonian among children aged 6-7 years. The data has been collected concerning a fixed set of socio-linguistic criteria (see below for an explanation of the code’s markup). Two most important criteria are education level of the mother (higher education vs. (specialized) secondary education) and the living environment (rural vs. urban environment). The comparison includes two Estonian towns and rural areas: the town of Rapla vs. Rapla county and the town of Tartu vs. Tartu county. Four families have been selected both from a rural and an urban environment where the mother has a higher education and four families where the mother does not have higher education. The following basic conditions have been considered when collecting data: there are two children in a family; the recording consists of spontaneous speech between the older child and the mother; neither the child or the parent has a mental disability; the family is not bilingual. Recordings are made in everyday situations.
File names indicate the child's name, the environment, and the mother's education level. Here are examples:
HulTkesk = Hu - first two letters of the child’s name; l – urban environment; T –Tartu; kesk - secondary education
HamRkõrg = Ha - first two letters of the child’s name; m – rural environment; R – Rapla; koerg - higher education
The data has been collected and transcribed by Andra Kütt (University of Tallinn, PhD student in linguistics).
